RAFTING EXCURSIONS
AT THE BLACKWELL
A typical rafting excursion will begin in
Ansonia, Pennsylvania, along Route 6, and
continue south through the Pennsylvania Grand
Canyon / Pine Creek Gorge to Blackwell. River
off-loading and parking facilities are available
right in front of The Blackwell and two miles
south of Blackwell at Rattle Snake Rock on
Route 414.
The water level of Pine Creek determines
the duration of this river activity; however,
under normal conditions, the Pine Creek Gorge
has sufficient water for canoes and rafts
until the first week in June. Although more
serene, trips from The Blackwell to Cedar
Run (6 miles south of Blackwell) or to Slate
Run (13 miles south of Blackwell) can be
undertaken through the month of June.
Pine Creek, from Ansonia to Blackwell, is
classified as a Class III water with frequent
rapids and swift flowing water. The water
below Blackwell is considered a Class II
River with frequent rapids of medium difficulty
with unobstructed passages and low ledges.
