FISHING PINE CREEK
AT THE BLACKWELL

The Blackwell is uniquely situated in one of the finest trout fishing areas in the North East.

Pine Creek has significant populations of brown, rainbow and brook trout. Several areas in the upper sections of Pine Creek support native trout.

Two of the finest freestone native trout streams in all of Pennsylvania, Slate Run and Cedar Run, are minutes from The Blackwell. These streams are special regulation streams and you will need to consult the Pennsylvania fishing regulations to become conversant with the rules and regulations applicable to each.

There are no less than 20 trout streams within one hour from The Blackwell; each affording singular and unique challenges to the trout angler.

For the flyfishing enthusiast, the Pine Creek Valley offers spectacular opportunities from April through June. The season begins with the quill gordon and continues with the green eggsac caddis, the hendrickson, the march brown, the gray fox, the sulfur, the green drake, the brown drake and the slate drake. The drake hatch throughout the canyon is an event not to be missed.
Throughout the season, excellent fishing results can be found using various stone fly and crayfish imitations.

Early morning or early evening, fishing with blue wing olives can yield impressive results.

Throughout the summer, Cedar Run and Slate Run afford fishing with terrestrials.

For those looking for quiet seclusion and the consummate flyfishing challenge, you are invited to try small stream/ headwater flyfishing. In addition to the headwaters of Slate and Cedar Runs, small area streams such as Four Mile, Trout Run and Morris Run offer year round brook trout action. For the more adventursome, there are several large area beaver ponds which support significant brook trout populations

If you are fishing the Pine Creek area for the first time, we recommend that you procure the services of experienced flyfishing guides. Arrangements for guides can be made directly through the Slate Run Tackle Shop (authorized Orvis dealer) (570) 753-8551, or if you are guests of The Blackwell, hotel staff would be pleased to make the arrangements for you.

A unique flyfishing experience can be had by taking a guided canoe trip while fishing Pine Creek through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. In addition to the excellent and secluded fishing experience, close-up views of the scenery and wildlife (turkey, bear, deer, osprey and bald eagles) will make your day unforgettable. The arrangements can be made through Canyon Cruise (814) 435-2969, or if you are guests of The Blackwell, hotel staff would be pleased to make the arrangements for you. However, it is strongly recommended that guided fishing trips on Pine Creek be scheduled for a weekday due to the high level of water traffic from the various canoe and raft outfitters.
During your weekday stays, you will have an opportunity to sample all that the Pine Creek Valley has to offer, and do so in relative quiet and solitude. Contact The Blackwell manager for room availability and for itinerary and activity suggestions.
