CYCLING THE RAILS TO TRAILS
AT THE BLACKWELL
The Blackwell abuts the Pine Creek Trail
which extends approximately 30 miles through
the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. This Trail
is a recently converted railroad track and
has a 3% grade. In October of 1997, the first
section of the Pine Creek Rails to Trails
project was opened to the public. This section
of the trail is welcome to hikers, bijers
and cross country skiiers.
A trip through the canyon can be as long
or as short as you wish. Constructed along
abandoned railroad lines, the Pine Creek
Trail is open from Jersey Shore through Blackwell
and travels 19 miles through the Pennsylvania
Grand Canyon, ending in Ansonia, Pennsylvania
along Route 6. Upon completion, the Pine
Creek Trail will traverse the entire Pine
Creek Valley and end in the city of Wellsboro.
Cycling through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon
provides the rider with spectacular scenery
and wildlife. Cascading waterfalls, spectacular
pines and hardwoods, flowering mountain laurel
and rhododendron await the trail visitor.
Whatever distance you cycle, you are nonetheless
certain to encounter bald eagles, osprey,
kingfishers and several species of duck.
For those preferring a more challenging cycling
experience, the mountains surrounding The
Blackwell present a formidable mountain biking
challenge. These mountains are criss-crossed
with semi-improved mountain roads. The mountain
biker, in the course of a day, can travel
over 100 miles and never see the same view
twice and never travel more than a 15 mile
distance from The Blackwell. The mountain
biker will be exposed to many vistas overlooking
the Pine Creek Gorge and will enjoy every
benefit enjoyed by the backpacker and hiker.
Detailed maps of the mountain roads in Northern
and Southern Tioga Counties are available
at The Blackwell.
